Regular Gardener or a One Off Tidy Up? How to Decide

Regular gardener or one off clean up is a decision most people make backwards. They wait until the yard has properly got away from them, book a big rescue, enjoy it for about five weeks, then watch the whole thing happen again.

Both jobs are legitimate. They just solve different problems. Here is how we think about it.

Should I get a regular gardener or a one off tidy up?

If the yard is currently out of control, you want a one off tidy up first. If the yard is fine but keeps getting away from you, you want someone on a regular round. Most people who call us end up doing the first once, then the second forever, and that is usually the right order.

The honest test is not how the yard looks today. It is what happened the last three times you promised yourself you would get to it on the weekend.

When is a one off clean up the right call?

A one off makes sense when there is a defined finish line. Moving out and the agent wants photos. Moving in and the last owner had other priorities. A rental inspection in ten days. A party in the backyard. Coming back from six weeks away to a lawn that has ideas.

In those cases you do not need an ongoing arrangement. You need one solid visit that resets the place, and that is exactly what we do. Bigger first visits and proper catch up jobs take longer than a routine mow, so they are quoted on their own.

When does a regular visit make more sense?

When the problem is time rather than the yard. If the place looks decent for a fortnight and then quietly slides, no amount of one off rescues will fix that, because the yard is not the thing that is broken, the calendar is.

A regular slot means it stays at "tidy" instead of cycling between "fine" and "how did that happen". It is also less work per visit, which is why regulars almost never need the big catch up job again.

How often should a regular visit be?

For most Hills District lawns, every two to three weeks through summer and about every four weeks over winter. We mow to the lawn rather than to a fixed weekly cycle, because a lawn in July and the same lawn in January are two completely different animals.

Beds, edges and hedges run on a slower clock. We tend to fold weeding and edging into the mowing visits and handle hedges seasonally. Our guide on when to trim hedges in Australia has the timing on that.

Am I locked into a contract?

No. There are no lock in contracts. You go on the round, you get a reminder about a week before each visit with the planned time, and if the timing does not suit you say so and we move it.

That reminder matters more than it sounds. Knowing exactly when someone is coming is half the reason people stay. As one of our customers, Chris, put it: "Don contacted me in advance and arrived on time. He did a great job mowing the lawn and left everything clean and tidy afterward. I couldn't ask for more."

Do I need to be home?

Not usually. Side gate access is enough, and plenty of our regulars are at work when we come through. If we cannot get in, we call rather than guess, and we will not climb a locked gate or leave a job half done and say nothing.

We also read the weather rather than the calendar. If the ground is soaked, mowing it tears the lawn up, so we will move the visit and tell you why rather than turn up and do damage.

What happens to the clippings and green waste?

Clippings go in your green bin and the tidy up is included, so you get the place swept and blown down before we leave. If a job produces more than the bin can take, which happens after a big catch up or a hedge reduction, we can take the extra away for an agreed price. It is quoted up front, never a surprise on the invoice.

Green bin rules vary by council, so it is worth checking your own. The Hills Shire and City of Parramatta both publish what is allowed and what is not.

What will it cost?

It depends on the size of the block and how far it has got away from you, which is why we quote it in person and for free before anything starts. Once quoted, the price does not change unless the job does.

Where most people land

If you are looking at the yard right now and wincing, start with the one off. If you are looking at it and thinking "it is fine, but I said that last month too", start with the round.

Either way, we will tell you honestly which one we think you need, including when the answer is "you do not need us every fortnight". Five years of doing this in the Hills has been built almost entirely on word of mouth, and that only works if the advice is straight.
