Lawn Mowing in Parramatta, Small Yards and Tight Access

What is different about lawn mowing in Parramatta?

Three things: the yards are smaller, the summers are hotter, and getting to the back is often the hardest part of the job. Lawn mowing Parramatta homeowners need is less about covering ground and more about working neatly in a confined space, and any quote that ignores access is not really a quote. Here is what that means in practice.

We run out of Kellyville and cover down through Parramatta, so we see both ends of it in the same week: a half acre in the Hills on Tuesday, a townhouse courtyard off Church Street on Wednesday. They are genuinely different jobs.

Small yards are not automatically quick jobs

A courtyard lawn takes less mowing and more manoeuvring, and the second one is what eats the time.

On an open Hills block a mower can run long, straight passes and be done. In a Parramatta villa or townhouse yard you are turning constantly, working around a clothesline, an aircon unit, a garden bed, a paved entertaining area and a fence line that is never quite square. The edging and whipper snipping is proportionally a much bigger share of the work than the mowing itself.

Which is why "it's only a small yard" and "it'll be cheap" are not the same sentence. It is still usually less than a big block, but not by as much as the square metres suggest.

How much does access matter?

More than almost anything else. A 900mm side gate and a mower are not always compatible, and that has to be known before the price is set.

Common Parramatta situations we deal with: access only through the garage, a locked communal side path, a rear yard reached through the house, or a gate that opens onto a step. None of them are problems as such, they just change what equipment comes off the ute and how long the job takes.

That is why we ask for a photo and the location before quoting, rather than giving you a number over the phone that we would only have to revise on arrival. If we cannot get in, Don calls rather than guesses.

Do Parramatta lawns need mowing more often?

Usually yes, at least through summer, because it runs hotter out this way than it does up in the Hills.

Western Sydney summers are genuinely warmer, and warm season grasses respond to that. Kikuyu and couch, which dominate a lot of Parramatta yards, will push hard from October through March. Kikuyu in that weather does not so much grow as commute, and if you leave four weeks between cuts in January you are not booking a mow, you are booking a rescue.

Rough guide: every two to three weeks over summer, stretching to about four weeks in winter. More on the reasoning in how often to mow your lawn.

Should the cut height change?

Yes, and going higher through summer is the cheapest lawn improvement available to you.

Longer leaf shades the soil, so the ground holds moisture and stays cooler, which matters a lot on a small hot yard with fences and brick radiating heat back at it. It also crowds out weeds before they establish. Scalping a lawn short in a Parramatta February to buy an extra week between mows is a false economy, you get a stressed, brown, weedy lawn instead.

If you are not sure what grass you have, buffalo, couch or kikuyu will tell you in about a minute, and the right height follows from there. Sydney Water is worth a look too for current water rules if you are watering to bring a tired lawn back.

Where do the clippings go in a townhouse?

Into your green bin, with the tidy up included, and anything over that gets priced before it leaves.

Green bin capacity is the practical constraint in a lot of Parramatta properties, especially where bins are shared or stored in a common area. A regular mow rarely troubles it. A first visit on a lawn that has been left a while often will. We will tell you what removal costs before we take anything away, never after. Bin days and collection rules for your street sit with City of Parramatta.

Do I have to be home?

No. Side gate access is enough, and most of our customers are at work when the mow happens.

Regulars get a reminder about a week before each visit with the planned day, so nothing arrives unannounced. There is no lock in, no minimum term, and you can pause or skip a visit with a message. If something on site stops us getting in, you get a call, not a mystery.

What does it cost?

That depends on the yard, and specifically on access, obstacles and how long it has been since the last cut, not just on area. We would rather look at the actual place than guess. The factors are set out in what moves the price of a mow, and the price we give holds unless the job itself changes.
